This is just a selection of the restaurants that we have really enjoyed. Keep checking back for updates because we eat out a lot…
Probably my favourite of all the restaurants for a more substantial evening meal. Staff are lovely, attentive but not overly-so, the ambience is relaxed and the food is delicious – deep-fried baby Camembert to start followed by Mediterranean fish soup, for example. And make sure you leave room for some Sticky Toffee Pudding. You’ll understand why.
Great little tapas bar in the square serving drinks, tapas, raciones and meals. Staff are very friendly and efficient and it always seems to be one of the busiest bars in the Plaza.
La Taberna El Mentidero
Love this wee place just off the main square. Pick a few tapas from the counter, order up an ice-cold cerveza or tinto verano then head for the terrace at the back.
Not in the main Plaza but a great little restaurant in a beautiful setting. As it is mostly set outdoors, it closes right through winter and, when it is open, it’s very popular so booking is advisable. But the food is lovely and the little courtyard where you eat is so pretty that you really have to try it, especially on a balmy summer’s night. We ate here for my daughter’s 18th birthday. We hadn’t been in Spain long and were still getting used to life here but we had such a lovely, memorable night that it will remain one of favourite places.
Another one in the main square. They do a very tasty Gambas Pil-Pil and good for a breakfast too (try the churros.) Great place to sit and watch the world go by.
La Mar Chica
Set almost slap bang in the middle of the Paseo Maritimo, this is one of my favourite restaurants on the Costa. The Sopa de Pescado y Marisco is sublime, they do an amazing Paella and they also offer my favourite Tortillas de Camarones as a tapas or racion.
The best Espetos de Sardinas that I have tried so far and in a beautiful setting on the beach. Enough said.
La Cabaña del Canario
Set in the El Peñoncillo area of the Costa, this diner doesn’t look like much from the roadside – where some of the outside tables are rather precariously placed – but the food is really tasty and they offer a great choice of tapas for only €1 each. You can’t argue with that! Try the Crujientes con Queso, Bacon y Langostino.
Yes, I know – pizza, Italian. But this wee place, right next to our building, is great value and makes lovely, fresh pizza (amongst other things). Ideal for a really-can’t-be-bothered-cooking kind of night
